The Importance of Family in Recovery
At Oceanside Mental Health, we understand that recovery is not only an individual journey but one that can be significantly supported by the involvement of family members and loved ones. Our approach with family (and chosen family) is available to help both the client and family acquire insight, education, support, and healing.
Why Family Matters in PHP/IOP
- Support and Understanding: Families can be instrumental in creating a supportive environment for individuals in treatment. We aim to educate family members about mental health, substance use, and the recovery process so they can offer better support.
- Improved Communication: Recovery often brings up all kinds of emotions. Our sessions help the client and their loved ones improve communication, helping to build stronger and more meaningful relationships.
- Breaking Cycles: Many of our clients have experienced or are currently experiencing difficult family dynamics. Joint sessions aim to address and heal these cycles, helping both the individual and the family unit rebuild trust and understanding.
What We Offer
- Therapeutic Collaboration: These sessions involve both the individual and their family members or key support figures. The goal is to help the client and their loved ones identify goals for the relationship, practice open communication, and repair challenges with trust. Ultimately, we aim to help clients and their loved ones with rebuilding relationships, setting boundaries, and fostering mutual understanding.
- Conflict Resolution: Families will learn tools to navigate conflicts, set boundaries, and communicate in a compassionate, solution-focused way.
How It Works
- Integration into Treatment: Family involvement is tailored to meet each individual’s needs. Our clinicians assess the best approach for involving family in therapy and ensure that it complements the individual’s treatment plan.
- Virtual or In-person Sessions: Client’s loved ones can attend in-person or virtually to accommodate for long distance relationships.
- Scheduling and Flexibility: We understand the importance of family time and the challenges of coordinating schedules. We offer flexible session times to make family involvement as convenient as possible.
- Confidentiality: All sessions are conducted with the highest level of confidentiality, ensuring that family members feel safe and respected throughout the process.
